La HERmandad: Elevating Underrepresented Voices in Clarinet Music
Founded in 2020 by Carrie RavenStem and Adria Sutherland, La HERmandad is a clarinet duo dedicated to the commission and performance of new clarinet duo music. With a mission to spotlight underrepresented composers and share the music of living composers, La HERmandad has made a significant impact on the contemporary clarinet community.

Our Journey and Milestones
Debut Performance
La HERmandad made its debut on April 10, 2021, at the International Clarinet Association (ICA) Clareidoscope Festival, setting the stage for an exciting journey of musical innovation and collaboration.
Commissioning New Works
In 2021, the duo commissioned composer Jenni Brandon to create a new work titled The Mountain. This piece was given its world premiere at the ICA ClarinetFest in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, in July 2022, marking a major milestone in their commitment to expanding the clarinet repertoire.
ICA 50th Anniversary ClarinetFest
La HERmandad was honored to be invited as guest performers for the ICA’s 50th Anniversary ClarinetFest in Denver, Colorado, in July 2023. They premiered re:CONNECT, a commissioned work by composer Erich Stem, which reflects on the evolving nature of human connection during and after the pandemic.
Music by Women International Festival
As guest artists, La HERmandad performed at the Music by Women International Festival at Mississippi University for Women in 2024, presenting Jenni Brandon’s The Mountain. They are set to return in 2025 to perform Five Cats, a newly commissioned duo by Fran Griffin.
Looking Ahead: 2025 and Beyond
The duo continues to push artistic boundaries and will be featured in a full recital at the ICA ClarinetFest in the summer of 2025. This performance will include collaborations with esteemed Backun Artists Amy Guffey and Mark Cramer.
